"JCS BN-1" 4-Bit Linear PCM Synthesizer - Part 2 (Finished)

video upload by blarrer20

"This video demonstrates the final version of a 4-bit Linear PCM synthesizer that I have designed and built over about two months. It makes use of mostly Soviet clones of 7400 and 74LS series TTL chips, with no microcontrollers involved. It has a 256 x 4 SRAM chip that allows the user to program whatever waveforms may be desired, with looping capability, and starting at whatever point desired. Most importantly, it is able to be controlled by an external source, for example a keyboard instrument. It also has a frequency doubler circuit. This video is part 2 of 2, showing the finished product.

Ambient jam with the Sequential Prophet Rev2, Eurorack, Sloër, and Soma Cosmos

video upload by Jay Hosking

"Please support my work on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/jayhosking
A live, semi-improvised synthesizer jam performed entirely on hardware.

I went to the store to try out the Sequential Prophet Rev2 for fun, but they didn't have it set up on the floor.

"You should just take it home," the rep said. "Bring it back within 30 days if you don't want it."

So here we are, with the Prophet Rev2 at home. I love having so many voices that so easily can be panned into a binaural sound. The keybed and layout are fantastic and I just like playing it. The sound is great except when it isn't; something about the full-open filter or resonance is displeasing in a mix, though I often don't mind it on its own. Here, I made a binaural patch, with the same synth sound hard panned to left and right sides, but slight variation in the DCOs and "slop" (terrible word) leading to a very rich stereo feeling. One of those rare beautiful things you can do with only some polysynths (and software, of course).

In short, the Prophet Rev2 is a wonderful synth to explore with something of a frumpy sound, for better and for worse.

I was noodling on some chords and wanted accompaniment, so I started with the Cosmos (for some asymmetrical looping), and then took out my melodic eurorack skiff. It's been a while since I had it on the table, so it was nice just to hear these sounds again. Eurorack just leads me to places and sounds I might not otherwise find.

Ultimately, this jam came together in a day, and I'm always a little worried about those ones, because you might not like them as much the next day. So far, though, I'm pretty happy with it.

Thanks for listening.

Sequential Prophet Rev2 - pads
Walrus Sloër - reverb for Rev2
Soma Cosmos - looping for Rev2
Eurorack:
Qu-Bit Chord V2 through Endorphines Squawk Dirty to Me - organ sort of sound
Frequency Central Product - droning analog voice
4ms Ensemble Oscillator through Make Noise QPAS - hyperspace organ
Effects are described in the video, and include Happy Nerding FX Aid XL, Noise Engineering Melotus Versio and Desmodus Versio, Intellijel Multi-FX 1U
ALM Busy Circuits Pamela's New Workout - modulation for all the voices

Performed and recorded live, with EQ, compression, and limiting on the master.

"Excellent used condition, includes original packaging, power supply and rack ear kit.

XERXES delivers an unmatchable level of warmth through its two digitally controlled analog oscillators. A multimode analog filter, white and pink noise generator, 2 ADSR envelopes, 2 sync-able LFOs, unique analog BBD chorus with 3 modes, full MPE-based polyphonic aftertouch, and complete MIDI control including polyphonic aftertouch and MPE work together to bring a classic analog sound ready to integrate into modern times. MK2 features an updated VCA section, and balanced outputs.

Xerxes produces triangle, saw, square, and PWM waveforms with variable drift controls from each oscillator, sync with variable phase shifting, and ring modulation allowing for complex cross-modulation effects. Each oscillator features an octave switch, bipolar transpose potentiometer +/-7 semitones, a master tuning pot affecting both oscillators, and a detune knob for subtly detuning Oscillator 2 to Oscillator 1. Portamento/Glissando or Glide can be programmed to affect Oscillator 1, 2, or both.

The analog multimode filter on XERXES offers 24db/oct low pass, 12db/oct high pass modes and a band pass filter mode switchable between 6db/oct & 12db/oct for all kinds of filter characteristics. The filter can also be modulated by the dedicated ADSR envelope, LFO, velocity, and aftertouch (MPE and Polyphonic Aftertouch) allowing for incredibly expressive performance and programming.

XERXES features 6 LFO waveforms: Sine, triangle, saw, ramp, square, and random, plus a dedicated delay control to fade the LFO to the full amount set by the depth knob. Two LFOs are selectable with an A/B switch, each of which can be used to control multiple parameters set by the button switches to control oscillator tuning (A/B/Both) filter cutoff, and amplifier levels (VCF/VCA/Both.) Each of these LFOs also includes a Sync on/off switch.

XERXES features a beautiful, fully-analogue BBD-based chorus with 3 selectable modes, similar to the chorus effect found on the vintage Elka Synthex synthesizer. XERXES MK2 is equipped with stereo 1/4” balanced outputs to take full advantage of the stereo chorusing effect.

Finally, XERXES features full MIDI control and ability to store 128 user presets per bank across 11 banks (Factory, Vintage and 9 user banks) integrating this classic synth concept seamlessly into any studio setup."

Beautiful Noise When The Sun Explodes First Look w/ Synths (Moog Werkstatt-O1)

video upload by Duskmos

"In this Signal Colors: Primer, I'm taking a look at the Beautiful Noise: When The Sun Explodes, paired up w/ the Moog Werkstatt-01. A fun combo! Check out the sounds I'm getting with some great drive/distortion and spring reverb and an added trem effect."

"When The Sun Explodes is the ultimate tool for creating long ambient swells of atmospheric reverberation, to stuttering, chaotic feedback oscillations overloading your amplifier.

The core reverb emulates a classic spring tank, with a variety of controls to further shape the tone and length of the signal. The feedback footswitch engages a linear rising or LFO/tremolo controlled feedback loop, which forces the wet reverb signal back into the input creating some over-the-top noise effects, with a boost footswitch instantly doubling the amount of reverberation for an instant wave of sound. The output gain, with the additional clipping options of symmetrical, asymmetrical or no clipping selects between a range of gain shapes and amplitudes.

Plug any and all instruments into this box of utter sonic dystopia, for an endlessly reverberant, fuzzed out noise experience no effects pedal has yet to reach."

Novation Summit - A playing attempt at Brian Crain's "Imagining"

video uploads by eM

Playlist:
Novation Summit - A playing attempt at Brian Crain's "Imagining"
One of my favorite piano artists Brian Crain, his song 'Imagining' attempting to play it. IIt definitely takes some muscle memory, but I love this song, love to hear it sound on the Summit.
Novation Summit - "Morning Stroll" SM Plucked Keys
Took a walk outside with the family in our new neighborhood... beautiful sunny day. Much to be thankful for. a short inspirational piece from that played here. I hope wherever you are you will find an enjoyable stroll for yourself.
Novation Summit - SM Plucked Keys (Orano patch) - "Pirate's Beach"
Could pass for a guitar sound, do you think? Credit to Orano's patch again, some reverb from the flashback and hall of fame, subtle reverb and delay on the Summit, I know I know.. why not just use one or the other. Well, it's convenient to alternate, the HoF and FB pedals are primarily not adjusted as it's also sent thru my mixer as an FX channel for other instruments. Enjoy.
Novation Summit - "Aisle" - Multi Mode - 1. SM 5th Sense 2. Sm Who's Afraid (Orano's single patches)
Credit to Orano's Novation Summit single patches, I split them in multi mode, as you'll usually see me do. In this improvisation I'm playing with the delay timing effects on the #2 patch while playing pad on the #1. The onboard delay and reverb effects gives instant breaths for your creative atmospheres.
Novation Summit - "Crystal Falls" Multi Setting (SM Leviathan and SM Popcorn Arp)
Patch creation credit to Orano Music @ https://www.orano.co.uk/shop. Just having fun with blending his patches, very lush and enjoyable, highly recommended!
Novation Summit - SM Leviathan (patch Created by Orano Music)
This patch (along with many others) was created by Orano Music
Novation Summit - "Legendary Keys" - Solo Piano - Multi Mode
I like taking the same single patch and splitting them between both the A and B sections. There are a few minor tweaks between the two sections of course, the A section I'll use for solo piano playing with some slight filter manipulations while the B section is mainly conducting the arp in the play tick on the arp knob, this basically follows the key strokes and does a catch up, so to say, as there is also delay and feedback being added for dynamic effect. I like being able to create an immersivity effect to keep me going in my solo playing. The Summit never fails to conveniently produce this very basic task.

Since OBS has fixed their NDI plugin, it's less work around for me to set up these recordings again. Thanks for listening. appreciate any comments or tips for solo piano playing and any other recommendations to help me along this Summit playing journey.

Folktek Mescaline - Hybrid V2 Channel , V1 Motion , V1 Mental, frame and PS

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"One complete Folktek Mescaline with frame power supply and collection of duPont patch cables.
This is a hybrid of V2 Channel and V1 Motion and V1 Mental.

This unit is in great shape. The only blemish of note is 1 patch point that shows some wear but is fully functional. See pics for detail.

The power supply has a 3 part pigtail that powers all three modules from a single wallwart rated at 1500ma.

Includes original manual and some other info.

Mescaline is one of the finest times you'll have. It might seem intimidating at first but ultimately once you dive in, you realize there was nothing to fear and it's only here to help open you to extreme possibilities. It's capable of creating entire compositions and the possibilities are vast. -

Each of the 3 boards are eurorack compatible and can be installed in a eurorack system individually or all together. Each has its own eurorack power plug on the back. Each module is 44HP
Each of these boards is capable of being powered on a standard 12v adapter. Each has a 2.1mm jack on the back.
When used together, all power can be jumped to power all three boards off the same 12v power source or eurorack power source.
A 12VDC power supply and 3 way jumper is included in this sale.

CHANNEL
A 10 note polyphonic synthesizer with a sweet, warm sound and a huge custom designed reverb which also has an audio input and can be used to process external sound. Channel becomes a powerful effects processor with some very nice DSP designs we've been working on for the past year.
-A touch-based synth which provides a sweet sounding 10 key oscillation based 10 filtered and reshaped analog square wave oscillators, each with a decay on the amp.
-Each key is tuned individually and can be tuned to specific notes on the back via tuning trim pots so you can create intervals or pitch arrangements as you like.
-Master pitch control (with control voltage) lets you change the tuning of all notes simultaneously.
-10 note polyphony and all notes can be triggered.
-Synthesis passes through any of 4 selectable custom DSP effects - reverb which is huge and near infinite, notated tight delay, pitch shifter delay and palindrome reverse delay. Each effect has mix, two controls over effect changes and a low pass filter or damping.

V2 has Gain stage adjustments on Channel
V2 Noise filtering on Channel
V2 pitch range trim pot added to allow for great control of the master frequency

-3.5mm jacks represent audio in, audio out (x2 = right and left), cv in.
-Jumpable headers for all functions as well as power.

MOTION
Motion is made up of two sequencers with simple but fully-capable function and some added function that other things don't/can't perform that help Mental to really shine. Both sequencers have clock division to break the rhythm but perhaps most important is how the trigger sequencer works - using opto-couplers (switches) to trigger parts within Mental to create sounds, textures and rhythms that voltage sources simply can't. It does this by directly connecting multiple parts within Mental. The CV does a great job of synching Channel.

Motion also has sine modulation (vactrol or cv), gate triggers, resets for the sequencers to determine sequence length, and can got into chaotic territory but jumping voltages into the clock inputs.
-8 part CV Sequencer
-8 part trigger sequencer with multi-add functionality
-5 part clock division for each sequencer
-vactrol-based sine modulation
-3.5mm jacks represent clock in, cv sequencer clock out, cv sequencer cv out, modulation out, trigger sequencer clock out.
-Jumpable headers for all functions as well as power.

MENTAL
Capable of so many things. It's an incredibly unique drum synth that will create odd and beautiful beats for days. It's a Drone synth that's generates some incredibly rich drone with multi-oscillation and in-circuit filtering. It's an audio processor that can take any incoming audio and chop it into place, filter it, distort it and screw it in ways that nothing else does.
-Based on the root synthesis of other Folktek instruments Materia, Mentalis and Matter.
-17 input points to control synthesis and filtering via the sequencer trigger or cv points as well as the clock division points.
-removable breadboard to allow for development and experimentation.
-4 patchable pots to attenuate signals and gain more control *and/or* create direct patches to create drone scapes or use Mental as an audio processor.
-volume control
-3.5mm jacks represent audio out and two vacant with representative headers to input voltage or audio signals from external modules or audio sources.
-send Mental to the input of Channel to add reverb to the signal.
-Jumpable headers for all functions as well as power."

And the press release:

Noise Engineering announces new Legio platform including Virt Iter Legio oscillator and Librae Legio dynamics processor

Los Angeles, CA — Noise Engineering is back with two modules for a new 6HP Eurorack platform: Virt Iter Legio and Librae Legio.

Virt Iter Legio is a stereo oscillator with a distinct and versatile sound. Its three modes – Bass, SawX, and Harm – will be familiar to users of Noise Engineering’s free Virt Vereor plugin or those who have the Arturia Microfreak, both of which are based on the same algorithms.

Virt Iter Legio features independent left and right phase-modulation inputs, a sync input, and a lush vintage-inspired chorus. This small oscillator puts unique sounds right at your fingertips and makes them easy to manipulate within the stereo field. Virt Iter Legio works well for beautiful pads, hard-hitting basses, and leads that can be simple or otherworldly.

Librae Legio is a stereo dynamics processor designed for the master bus with compression, limiting, expansion, and optional saturation.

Librae Legio was designed to work with any type of patch. It’s great for limiting, compression, and expansion. Noise Engineering says they created it to be able to be applied as transparently as possible, but also so that you can crank the settings to really squish your sounds for maximal crunch. And of course they added a saturation stage that you can engage if you wish for some slight harmonic distortion: it adds a touch of color and some tape-like effects to louder elements. It’s also CV controllable and works great with mono or stereo signals.

The team had a great time testing this one on drum breaks, bass loops, hard techno, generative ambient soundscapes, and more. They also added an adjustable noise gate so that users could choose a setting to minimize noise accentuated by heavy compression in their patch. Librae Legio also has a sidechain filter that the user can set to change the behavior of the dynamics processing.

A platform a long time in the making
The Legio platform was first announced at NAMM 2020 with Virt Iter. The team mentioned that they’d heard from a lot of customers who were eager to get the module in their systems but parts shortages, supply-chain woes, and other problems meant multiple delays and redesigns of the product to make it work with available parts. The result was something even they were amazed with. In fact, while product testing is a job everyone on the team is excited about, they all agreed that they were unanimously over the moon with how these modules came out.

"The Legio platform brings the power of a reprogrammable and multifunctional module down to a 6 HP size, perfect for any system. It's an exciting development and we're thrilled to be able to share it with the world!" said Chief of Destruction Markus Cancilla.

World of Legio
Similar to the popular Versio platform, Legio is also an oscillator and DSP platform. By making a free account at the Noise Engineering Customer Portal (https://portal.noiseengineering.us/), users can change the functionality of the module, absolutely free. In essence, buy one module, get both of these, with more to come, according to the Noise Engineering team. For those who are interested in writing their own firmwares, open-source support will be released later this year. Learn more at the World of Legio page at Noise Engineering.

The analog multimode filter on XERXES offers 24db/oct low pass and high pass modes and a band pass filter mode switchable from 12db/oct & 24db/oct for all kinds of filter characteristics.

Finally, XERXES features full MIDI control and ability to store 128 user presets per bank across 11 banks (Factory, Vintage and 9 user banks) integrating this classic synth concept seamlessly into any studio setup.

We provide free worldwide shipping with DHL (some restrictions apply)."

Roland JX-08 SEQUENCING (You're Allowed to Dance!)

video upload by Alba Ecstasy

"Roland JU-06A, JP-08, JX-03, SH-01A, SE-02 #ambient patches 👉 https://www.albaecstasy.ro

I was jamming with the Roland JX-08 on this beautiful and sunny - but cold - morning of Saturday, with two modified factory presets, testing the #sequencer, and it sounded too good not to recording it and share it with you!

This recording starts with PART B - a bass sequence that has a mono delay (dly1) on it.
PART A starts two minutes later, having a stereo delay (dly2) and the reverb (hall2) as effects.
No external effects were involved.

I recorded this session via USB Audio, on all the available audio channels that the Roland JX-08 comes with: the master - that includes the two Parts and the reverb also in one stereo channel, and I also kept each individual stereo channel of the two parts - that only have the delay as effect, resulting the original master output of the Roland JX-08, but backed by the individual channels!

Synopsis:
Even my first choice was the Roland JD-08, since I always wanted a full size Roland JD-800, as I was waiting for my order to be delivered (about 14 weeks starting in November 2021!), I changed my mind and found this beauty on stock, locally (thanks Jutas!)!
I had a Roland JX-8P on my hands, a few years ago, and maybe it was a (bad) repaired unit, since the sound was really unattractive (had some knob and functions replacements on the panel), and that kind of made me to be reserved with the JX-08.
...Until I played my friend's Roland JX-8P, a near mint unit, and that's was all: the sweetness and warm of the sound made me want to have such a synth in my studio (but I'm not gonna pay the crazy prices from the SH market!).

Conclusion:
Maybe the sound of the #RolandJX08 is not the same with the original, but I really don't care: the extras that are packed in it, makes the JX-08 perfect for my studio!
Arpeggiators, sequencers, a bunch of great effects, dual and split playing, 3 types of filters and so on!

Oh, and yes: my next move is the Roland JD-08! Definitely!

"At the heart of BlastBeats is a vintage FM chip called YMF-262 also known as the OPL3 chip & previously found in computer sound cards of the early 90s.

These chips were notoriously hard to program and were rarely used to their full potential. However, they can produce surprisingly rich beautiful and utterly dirty sounds with a bit of exploring...

By putting so many parameters within easy reach BlastBeasts makes it fun and easy to master the signature sound of the DOS era!

RYTHM & SYNTH
BlastBeats is a 10 voice groove box offering 6 drum voices and 4 synth instruments.

The many faders offer full control over the parameters of the instruments and can be automated and modulated per step

Beats and melodies are a pleasure to program thanks to the high quality illuminated buttons"

Noise Engineering Introduces Lacrima Versio

via Noise Engineering

Bring guitar-inspired effects into your rack with the devil’s autowah from Noise Engineering:

Lacrima Versio firmware

Los Angeles, CA — Lacrima Versio is Noise Engineering’s take on the classic autowah, in stereo, and with a twist.

Lacrima’s roots are in analog Autowah pedals. As a fan of the wah-pedal sound, Noise Engineering’s Doer of Many Things Kris Kaiser wanted to do a NE version of a wah as part of the Ruina line of analog distortions. The team was the better part of the way through a schematic when they realized that this would fit well on the Versio platform, and changed course.

Lacrima Versio features an envelope follower that controls a high-resonance filter. Morph the filter between lowpass, bandpass, and highpass slopes, and Lacrima covers all the sounds you’d expect from a typical wah – but this is not your typical wah. Route an adjustable distortion pre, post, or pre+post

filter for some saturation crunch. Add width and motion (and just a little otherworldly tone) to your sounds with a stereo chorus. Last but not least, use the Mod parameter to add audio-rate modulation and octavizing to your signal.
Lacrima Versio is way more fully featured than the module it started as, and even better, it’s available as a free download to anyone with any Versio module at the Noise Engineering Customer Portal (https://portal.noiseengineering.us/). Beautiful panel overlays will be available soon through Noise Engineering’s collaboration with Winterbloom.

Notable features:
• Stereo autowah with unique features: for everything from classic sounds to extreme filtering
• Adjustable and routable saturation distortion
• Juno-inspired chorus
• Octavizer and audio-rate modulation
• Guitar-inspired effects take your rack into a new realm

• Free to Versio module owners
• Availability: Download at the Noise Engineering Customer Portal starting on October 14, 2021

Virt Vereor, Sinc Vereor, and Ruina VST, AU, and AAX Public Beta | Noise Engineering

video upload by Noise Engineering

"Virt Vereor, Sinc Vereor, and Ruina VST, AU, and AAX Public Beta | Noise Engineering
The Freequel Bundle plugins are officially in public beta, available FREE now at the Noise Engineering Customer Portal. The Freequel bundle includes two beautiful synths and a truly epic multi-distortion.
Learn more at https://www.noiseengineering.us/blog/...

Sinc Vereor packs a powerful punch into a tiny package. The intuitive and inviting controls will make sound design a breeze. Blend between familiar waveforms like saw, triangle, and square. Super mode adds 6 phase-offset oscillators. Use Noise mode to generate self-similar noise for percussion, effects, and more. The Vereor section is our easily manipulated dynamics section using an ADSR envelope controlling a variable slope and analog-inspired multimode gate/filter. Add to that a vintage-inspired chorus and a library of presets. Loosely based on Noise Engineering’s beloved Eurorack module Sinc Iter, Sinc Vereor will astound with its versatility.

Virt Vereor is a powerful synthesizer that is as easy to use as it is unique and fun to play. Choose between a quadrature algorithm, a supersaw-inspired beast, or an additive algorithm with spectral control and distortion of partials. The Virt section is combined with the Vereor envelope/multi-mode gate/filter section and chorus. Virt Vereor makes a tremendous number of unique sounds with an immediate and usable interface.
Ruina is a creative stereo distortion plugin built on digital distortion algorithms. Run any sound through Ruina for warm, lush distortion, or crank the sliders to unleash complete destruction. Ruina has a wavefolder, a multiband saturator, a chaotic suboctave generator, octavizer, and phase shifter. It also features a notch or bandpass filter with adjustable tracking, and a control to set the order of the distortions in the signal flow to further customize your sound. Last but not least, Overdrive adds up to 128x gain for maximal destruction. With seven distortion types and fully automatable controls, it’s easy to turn your sounds into something new and unique with Ruina.

Don’t feel like tweaking the parameters? All our plugins come with tons of presets to fit any need, and a randomize button to play around on the fly.
Whether you need pads, leads, bass, or a distortion unlike any other, the Freequel Bundle has something for you."
